Forest & Foliage Playset

From Sketch to Scale Model

This set of double-sided, full-color illustrations easily assembles into a mini 3D landscape. Each piece started as a sketch, usually pencil, before moving on to digital color. For this series, I kept the rough pencil lines and shading to the aesthetic of a field study journal.

Since these are 3D models, each piece has artwork for the front and back. In the case of the trees, it helped their bushy shapes to draw two sets of foliage and then layer them together digitally.

Digital coloring in Procreate and Affinity Designer allowed easy adjustments during the printing process. Since this is a modular playset, I wanted to create the illusion of depth and atmospheric perspective by alternating a bright side and a shadow side on the final pieces. When placed on the same field, the light and dark sides contrast, creating broken lighting in a forest.
